Daylong heavy shower triggered severe waterlogging across Dhaka city inviting sufferings to the city dwellers on Saturday.

People across the city suffered from transportation crisis as there were few public transports on the less crowded city streets.

Rickshaws and CNG drivers are charged higher fares, causing distress to city dwellers.

The Met Office recorded 81 millimetres of rainfall between 6:00am and 6:00pm on Saturday.

The capital and the entire country have been experiencing continuous rainfall for the past week. The Met office predicted that the rains are likely to persist for a few more days due to strong monsoon winds in Bangladesh.

On the day of Eid, Dhaka witnessed heavy rain from early morning to noon, followed by intermittent showers throughout Saturday. As a result of the incessant rain, the highways and streets of the capital were flooded. Fortunately, there were no major traffic jams caused by the waterlogging during the Eid holidays.

Reports said that Old Dhaka, including areas like Bangshal and Nazimuddin Road, is submerged in water. Waterlogging has also affected certain parts of Dhanmondi, Mirpur, Hatirjheel, Agargaon to Jahangir Gate, Khamarbari to Farmgate, areas near the Farmgate-Tejgaon truck stand, Mohammadpur, Merul Badda, DIT Project, and Gulshan Lakeside area.

Habibur Rahman, an auto-rickshaw driver, mentioned that certain roads in Dhanmondi and Shukrabad were waterlogged due to the heavy rain. He encountered an engine shutdown while transporting passengers.

Another auto-rickshaw driver, Khorshed Alam, shared his experience of encountering waterlogging on the entire road while returning from Old Dhaka.

In the midst of waterlogging on various parts of Hatirjheel road, teenagers are taking advantage of the situation, engaging in water sports. Jubair Ahmed, one of the teenagers, mentioned that due to the accumulation of water, resembling a river, they were able to play football.

The Met Office reported that the monsoon has extended over India’s Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, northern parts of Bangladesh, Assam, and a portion of the North Bay of Bengal. Their forecast for the next 24 hours suggests light to moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds in most places of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, and Sylhet divisions, and in many places of Barisal and Chattagram divisions.
