The Detective Branch Dhaka Metropolitan Police said it has detained hardline Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam’s Dhaka City Unit chief Junayed Al Habib.

Joint Commissioner of DB Mahbub Alam told reporters that Habib was arrested from a madrassah in Baridhara area in the capital on Saturday afternoon.

Habib is the seventh senior Hefazat leader to have been arrested in recent days since a violent protest over the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in late March.

At least 17 people were killed in clashes during the protests in Hefazat stronghold Chattogram and Brahmanbaria.

Police filed several cases against Hefazat leaders and thousand others over the incidents.
