Hefazat leader Mamunul arrested

Law enforcers have arrested Hefazat-e-Islam leader Mamunul Haque from the capital.

A team of police, led by Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tenjgaon Zone Deputy Commissioner Harunur Rashid, detained him from Jamia Rahmania Madrassah in the capital's Mohammadpur area around noon on Sunday.

DMP Additional Commissioner Iftekharul Islam confirmed his arrest to the Business Post.

Mamunul, a Joint Secretary General of Hefazat, is wanted in several cases, he said.

DC Tejgaon Harun later confirmed Mamunul was arrested in a case filed over violence in 2020 with Mohammadpur police station.

Harun told reporters that they faced no resistances from madrassah students while arresting Mamunul.

Mamunul is the senior most Hefazat leader to be arrest since the group rose into prominence in 2013.

With Mamunul, at least eight senior leaders of Hefazat have now been arrested, following a violent protest over the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 26-27.

At least 12 people were killed during the protests in Hefazat stronghold Chattogram and Brahmanbaria.

On Saturday, detectives arrested Hefazat’s Dhaka city unit chief Junaid Al Habib.
