Nur Hossain Kasemi, secretary-general of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, passed away at a hospital in Dhaka on Sunday.
He breathed his last around 1:15pm while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU) of United Hospital.
His press secretary Mufti Munir Ahmed confirmed the matter to the media.
On December 1, Kasemi was admitted to the hospital with breathing problems. Later, he was moved to the ICU on December 10 as his condition worsened.
The Hefazat leader was tested negative for Covid-19 several times, said Munir Ahmed.
Kasemi had worked as Dhaka city unit president of Hefajat-e-Islam since the establishment of the Quawmi madrasa-based platform.
He was elected secretary-general of the organisation at its council held on November 15 last.
Kasemi was the founding director of Jamia Madania Madrasah in the capital’s Baridhara area.
