Daily covid infection rate jumped to 12.33 per cent on Wednesday, the highest since April 28.

It is the sixth consecutive day that the infection rate stayed in the double-digit range, according to data provided by the Directorate General of Health Services.

Currently, the overall infection rate is 13.39 per cent.

Thirty-six new Covid-19 deaths were recorded in a 24-hour period until 8:00am, pushing the local death tally to 12,949.

With 2,537 fresh cases during this period, the country’s caseload soared to 8,17,819, said the DGHS press release.

According to the release, 7,57,569 people have recovered so far.

In the last 24 hours, 20,604 samples were collected and 20,584 have been tested.

The mortality rate stands at 1.58 per cent.

A total of 2,267 patients have recovered from coronavirus in the 24-hour period, taking the overall recovery rate to 92.63 per cent.

Bangladesh launched its countrywide vaccination drive on February 7 with doses bought from India’s Serum Institute.

So far, 58,20,015 people have been administered the first dose of Covishield, the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine manufactured by SII, since January 27.

Of them, 42,28,741 received the second shots until Monday, according to the health authorities.

A vaccine export halt by India forced Bangladesh to keep administering the first dose suspended since April 26.

So far, 2,162 people have received China’s Sinopharm jabs. Another 6,00,000 doses of the vaccine are scheduled to arrive from China as a gift.

Coronavirus cases were first reported in China in December 2019. Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus case on March 8, 2020 and the first confirmed Covid-19 related death on March 18.
