The High Court (HC) has passed a verdict saying Hindu widows of the country will be entitled to the share of the all properties of their husbands and not just their homesteads.
A single bench of Justice Miftah Uddin Choudhury passed the order on Wednesday.
The verdict was passed in a case filed over the property of a Hindu family.
Confirming the matter to The Business Post, Barrister Syed Nafiul Islam said, “After 83 years Hindu widows regained their property rights.”
“Previously, Hindu widows were only entitled to their husbands' homesteads. After today's verdict, Hindu widows will get a share of agricultural land too,” he added.
The strictest part of Hindu law is the distribution of property among females. The law enacted in 1937, deprived daughters of inheriting their father's property.
