A Dhaka court has placed Rekha Akhtar and her Husband Farhad Ershad on an 8-day remand each in connection with a case lodged over torturing an elderly woman in her house where Rekha used to work as a housemaid. She also grabbed cash and valuables and fled.
The incident happened on January 18 in Malibagh in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Masud-Ur-Rahman passed the order Friday after the investigation officer sought 10 days remand for each.
Earlier on January 21, police arrested both of them for alleged assault and theft on the case.
Shahjahanpur police station conducted the raid at Chikon Matiya Maddhyapara of Kashipur under Ranisankail police station in Thakurgaon and arrested Rekha. Police arrested her husband Ershad from North Basabo in the capital.
Police also recovered looted gold ornaments and money from their possessions.
Later, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Walid Hosain informed reporters about the arrests.
He said Rekha has been working as a domestic help at the victim's house for one year.
Mehbuba Zaman, the house owner, went to Barishal on 17 January leaving her 75-year-old mother Bilkis, sister Dilruba Zaman and Rekha at her Malibagh residence.
Rekha assaulted Bilkis with an iron rod when Dilruba went out of the house the next day. She fled after looting gold ornaments and cash worth around 2.1 million taka.
Later, a case was filed at Shahjahanpur police station over the incident.
