Abu Sayed, a 12th-batch student of Begum Rokeya University's English department, lost his life at the age of only 22 while protesting for quota reform. He was also one of the coordinators of the university quota movement.
Sayed was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital after he got injured at the park intersection in front of Begum Rokeya University around 2pm last Tuesday. Doctors said he was dead on arrival.
The entire scene of Sayed's fatal injuries in front of the university was captured by multiple media organisations. Jamuna Television aired a video as well.
Apart from this, some witnesses recorded a video of the incident on their personal cameras and published it on social media. From these videos, a clear picture of the shooting of Abu Sayed can be seen.
Sayed was at the forefront of the protesters during the conflict. Police forces took up their positions right in front of him. Several armed policemen were standing along the main gate of the university.
He was seriously injured in the shooting of the police personnel stationed there.
This is how Abu Sayed stood his ground in front of the police force.
The policemen were firing rubber bullets from the opposite direction.
Sayed still did not move from his position, he remained standing with a stick in his hand. He was also trying to block the rubber bullet with that stick.
Sayed took the barrage of rubber bullets, and later sat down on the pavement.
At that moment one of the protesters came running and was reportedly shot as well.
Then others came and took Sayed away.
Sayeed's friend Anjan told the media, “Sayed fell on the ground after being injured by a stream of rubber bullets. His nose was bleeding. At that time, the conflict was going on. So there was a delay in taking him to the hospital.
Hriday Ranjan Roy, head of the surgery department of Rangpur Medical College Hospital, said, "Sayed died before being admitted to the medical surgery ward. He has rubber bullet wounds in multiple places on his body.
“The nose was bleeding. But whether he died due to being shot by rubber bullets or not, it is not possible to say at the moment without the autopsy report.”
