Hundreds protest against Israel in Dhaka

Some 2,000 leaders and activists of the Dhaka city unit of Islami Andolon Bangladesh held a demonstration in Dhaka on Friday, protesting against the attacks on worshipers at the first Qiblah of Muslims in Jerusalem by Israeli forces.

The demonstrators gathered at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka at about 11:00am after saying Eid-ul-Fitr prayers carrying banners, handwritten posters, and chanted slogans against Israel.

Some of the banners read, “Bring Israel under the trial of ICJ” and “Boycott Israel”.

They also expressed sympathy and solidarity with the people of Palestine.
Police said some 2,000 Islamists joined the protest.

“The demonstration ended peacefully. We did not have to intervene at all,” Hironmay Baruri, the officer-in-charge (operations) of Paltan police station, told The Business Post.

Israel has deployed tanks and troops to its border with Gaza, as it mulls whether to launch a ground operation in the territory after days of violence.

Conflict raged throughout Thursday as Palestinian armed groups fired rockets into Israel and the Israeli army maintained a barrage of airstrikes, reports BBC.

According to the health ministry of Gaza, at least 103 people were killed in the four days of the conflict. Officials in the territory, which is controlled by the Islamist militant group Hamas, and many civilians died including 27 children.
