Hundreds throng Shimula jetty on last day before Eid; number of ferries increased

Hundreds of commuters gathered at Shimula jetty on Thursday, the last day before Eid-ul-Fitr, in a mad rush to go home defying the government’s restrictions over the coronavirus outbreak. As result, jetty officials increaed the number of ferries operating on the route to seventeen.

There was a pressure on the Shimulia ferry ghat in Munshiganj for last several days and it continued on Thursday as well. Eid ul-Fitr, the biggest festival of Muslims, will be celebrated on Friday in Bangladesh.

On Wednesday, at least five people died due to heatstroke on two overcrowded ferries in Madaripur's Banglabazar. The ferries were crammed with homegoing passengers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr festivals, causing the deceased to fall sick.
