An epic monologue, ‘I am Sheikh Mujib’, has been translated into more than 10 languages.
This grand drama has so far been translated and was under the process of translation into over ten languages including Swedish, English, Spanish, Swahili, Nepali, Persian, Russian, French, Japanese, Tamil, Georgian etc.
A number of universities and theatres in different countries in Asia, Africa and Europe have presented and produced it in diverse languages as part of their academic and seminar programme, said a press release.
The institutes include Wiks Academy (folkhögskola), Lund University in Sweden, One World Theatre in Nepal, Wales University in UK, Kisii University and Kistrech Theatre International in Kenya and Jahangirnagar University from Bangladesh.
Eastern University in Sri Lanka will present it on stage in Tamil version as part of their International Mother Language Day 21 February celebration in 2022.
The epic monologue, originally written in Bengali, depicts the twentieth-century freedom struggle on the Indian subcontinent through the voice of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - from British colonial times to the first tentative years of independent Bangladesh under his leadership. Along the way, this political struggle was to a large extent also about the right to use one's own language.
In this epic monologue, Bengali-Swedish poet Anisur Rahman brings to life the voice and mind of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during all hardships and struggle for an independent nation for the Bengali speaking people of the Indian Subcontinent.
