International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)  has donated a cold storage mortuary extension, commonly known as freezers, to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMC) to support the hospital’s long-term infrastructure in managing mass fatality incidents.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the ICRC said that the new mortuary refrigerators unit would help increase DMCH’s capacity of preserving dead bodies.

“This new unit will allow keeping dead bodies at low temperatures. It will also help to reduce pressure on the hospital and preserve the dignity of the dead,” the statement added.

Jenny Hughes, ICRC forensic specialist said, “We took this initiative to ensure the proper management of preserving dead bodies in the DMCH. This will also help to protect the staff from undue risk”.

Since April 2021, the ICRC has donated 4’155 body bags, 20 emergency kits and 99’456 items of various Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to different agencies of first responders across Bangladesh.
