If necessary, potatoes will be imported: DNCRP DG

Authorities will import potatoes to keep the market normal, if necessary, said AHM Shafiquzzaman, Director General of the Directorate of National Consumers' Right Protection, on Thursday.

"If prices aren't stable in two or three days, we will recommend importing potatoes, which will not be good for anyone," he warned.

The DG was talking in a views exchange meeting at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner in Nilphamari on Thursday afternoon.

"There is enough potato stock in the country, but cold storage owners are selling potatoes at higher prices instead of being sold at the government-fixed rates. As a result, the price of potatoes has been increasing at the consumer level. But it's not supposed to happen,” he said.

Presided over by Pankaj Ghosh, deputy commissioner of Nilphamari, Superintendent of Police Md Golam Sabur, Deputy Director of District Agriculture Extension Department Abu Bakar Saiful Islam, President of District Industries and Merchants Association Engineer SM Safiqul Alam Dablo, President of Nilphamari Press Club Tahmin Haque Bobi were present at the meeting.

In the meeting, the district administration, district police and consumer rights protection department were instructed to display the government-fixed price charts in every cold storage and ensure the preservation of purchase and sale receipts.
