IGP asks police officers to act against abuse of legal firearms

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Thursday asked police officers to be more proactive in recovering illegal firearms and check guns regularly to prevent abuse of legal weapons.

Al-Mamun was speaking at the crime review programme of February and recent issues in the capital.

The IGP directed the field-level officials to pull up their socks to ensure law and order and prevent crimes on the occasion of Ramadan and Eid.

He said strict action has to be taken against other criminals such as robbers, ogyan parties (dope gangs), and malam (balm) parties on the occasion of Eid along with increased vigilance.

He called for the involvement of beat officers to monitor activities so that they could know about every incident in their respective areas and accordingly, the beat officers can take prompt action immediately if anything happens in their areas, he added.

The IGP also directed the police officers to take all necessary measures to ensure a smooth Eid journey for homebound people and prevent road accidents. Besides, he also ordered action against unfit buses and launches.

He also directed the chiefs of different police units to take precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the power plants.

In the meeting, Additional IGP (Crime and Operations) Md Atiqul Islam presented statistics on the overall crime situation in the country such as banditry, robbery, theft, burglary, murder, suicide, road accident, women and child abuse, rape, drug, and weapons recovery.

Additional IGP (Admin) Md Kamrul Ahsan, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Khandaker Golam Faruq, RAB Director General M Khurshid Hossain, Special Branch Additional IGP Md Monirul Islam and other Additional IGPs and heads of various police units based in Dhaka, Commissioners of all Metropolitan Police and Range DIGs were present in the meeting.
