International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) Bangladesh chapter has urged the interim government to take urgent effective steps to free 57 Bangladeshis who were sentenced in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The IHRC made this call in a statement signed by its Bangladesh chapter’s Director (media and information) Biplob Partho, sent to the media on Thursday.
The IHRC’s Bangladesh chapter President MA Hashem Raju, Ambassador and Dhaka University Professor Dr Mizanur Rahman and its Executive Director (Admin) Saifuddin Salam Mithu also signed the statement, reports BSS.
“The Bangladeshi citizens demonstrated in the UAE protesting killings and crack down of the students during the quota reform movement in the country and resulting in 57 Bangladeshis being sentenced to different tenure,” according to the IHRC statement.
Bangladeshi expatriates are entitled to get legal assistance if they suffer any loss or face any legal complexities, said the statement, saying that so, the Bangladesh government and its embassy have a responsibility to help their citizens.
The IHRC in its statement called the ministry of foreign affairs to take effective measures in this regard for providing legal assistance and holding diplomatic correspondence during this time which is very essential.
