Bangladesh Health Watch (BHW), a multi-stakeholder advocacy and monitoring network, requested the government to implement High Court directives that had directed to stop unnecessary C-sections in hospitals across the country.

The organisation came up with the request at a round table discussion on the Prevention of Medically Unnecessary Caesarean Section held at CIRDAP Auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday, said a media release.

The discussion was titled “High Court Directive on Stopping Unnecessary Cesarean Section and its Implementation” and was moderated by Dr Shehlina Ahmed, a working group member of BHW.

While discussing the issue, speakers also stressed the capacity-building training for midwives and called for the formulation of guidelines by the relevant authorities to all the individuals and organisations involved in the health sector in accordance with the High Court’s directives.

Prof Farhana Dewan, president of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Society of Bangladesh (OGSB) and Barrister Rashna Imam, an advocate of the Supreme Court and member of the advisory group of BHW presented keynotes at the event.

Farhana Dewan highlighted the role of service providers in this sector in stopping unnecessary caesarean sections in her presentation. On the other hand, Rashna Imam highlighted the legal aspects of this issue in her presentation.
