The Kaptai Lake in Rangamati, known as a treasure trove of freshwater fish, is the largest artificial watercourse in Southeast Asia and one of the main fisheries spots in Bangladesh.
The fish extracted from this 68,800-hectare lake by the region’s 24,000 fishermen usually go to different parts of the country, including Dhaka and Chattogram.
Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation, which oversees the lake, earned over Tk 11.68 crore from the lake in FY2021-22.
Last year, 17,870 tonnes of fish were extracted from Kaptai Lake while 64 tonnes of fish fry have been released in 2022 so far.
At present, 66 native species and six foreign species of fish are found in this lake.
