More than 500 tourists, who got stranded on St Martin’s Island in the Bay of Bengal due to inclement weather, are expected to return to Teknaf on Monday afternoon.

The authorities concerned suspended the movement of passenger vessels between Teknaf and St Martin’s Island from Sunday morning. However, the suspension was withdrawn on Monday, reports Dainik Amader Shomoy.

A handful of ships left Damdamia Ghat in Teknaf and headed for the island in the morning. The vessels are expected to reach Teknaf in the afternoon with the returning passengers.

Cox’s Bazar Additional District Magistrate Abu Sufian said, “The ships have been sent to St Martin’s island as per the instructions of the district administration to ensure that tourists can return safely.”

Chairman of St Martin’s Island union, Mujibur Rahman, said, “The tourists got stranded due to the suspension of the trawler movement, and all the tourists on the island are safe. We have informed the local administration about it.”

District Commissioner Muhammad Shaheen Imran said that maximum security for the tourists has been ensured and hotel authorities have been directed to provide harassment-free hospitality.
