The International Society of Nephrology and the International Federation of Kidney Foundation observe 9th March as World Kidney Day. The theme for this year’s Kidney Day is ‘Kidney Health for All’.

At present, the number of kidney patients around the world is nearly 85 crore while at least 24 lakh people die of kidney disease every year. In Bangladesh, around 35,000 to 40,000 people suffer from kidney failure every year.

In two decades, kidney disease has become the sixth most deadly disease from the 27th across the globe.

The treatment process of kidney patients is very long and costly as there is a scarcity of the necessary equipment and hospitals in the country, said Professor Dr M Fakrul Islam, managing director of Insaf Baraka Kidney and General Hospital.
