The High Court has granted bail to Dhaka-7 lawmaker Hazi Selim’s son Irfan Selim in a case filed over assaulting a Bangladesh Navy officer.
A virtual HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Badruzzaman passed the order on Thursday after disposing of a rule issued in this regard.
Advocate Saeed Ahmed Raja, Irfan Selim's lawyer, confirmed the matter to The Business Post saying that now there remains no bar on the release of Irfan from jail as he has received bail from the High Court.
On January 27, the same HC bench issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain in two weeks as to why it shall not grant bail to Irfan Selim, in the case filed over assaulting Lt Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy in the capital's Dhanmondi area in October last year. The HC bench also denied bail in this case on that day.
Earlier on January 6, a Dhaka court set February 10 for submission of a probe report against Irfan Selim, and his bodyguard Md Zahidul Mollah in a case filed over assaulting an official of Bangladesh Navy and his wife in the capital.
Earlier on November 1 last year, a Dhaka court placed Irfan Selim and his bodyguard on a 2-day fresh remand in connection with this case.
Earlier on October 28 last year, a Dhaka court placed Irfan Selim and his bodyguard on a 3-day remand for each of them in this case.
On January 5 this year, a Dhaka court granted bail to Irfan Selim in two cases filed under the Arms Act and the Narcotics Control Act.
Earlier on January 4, police sought clearance of the charges for Irfan after the investigation officer (IO) of the cases said to have found no evidence to prove the charges.
On October 27 last year, the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Co-operatives suspended Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Councillor Irfan Selim. The decision was taken under the Local Government (City Corporation) Act 2009, read a gazette notification.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained Irfan from his father’s residence at Devdas Lane of Swarighat in Old Dhaka on October 27 last year afternoon following a case filed with Dhanmondi Police Station by Lieutenant Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy for assaulting him.
Later, a mobile court of RAB sentenced Irfan Selim and his bodyguard Zahid to one year in jail for possessing illegal walkie-talkies and liquor.
Two separate cases were filed at the local police station -- one under the Arms Act and another under the Narcotics Control Act -- against the duo.
Two firearms, 38 walkie-talkies and liquor were recovered from the house during the drive.
According to the case statement, a private car hit Lt Wasif's motorcycle near Labaid Hospital at Dhanmondi around 7:45pm on October 25 when he and his wife were heading to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet.
