4 including army man killed in Bandarban 'gunfight'

Four people – a soldier and three members of the Parbatya Chattogram Jana Sanghati Samiti (PCJSS- Santu Larma) – have been killed in a reported gunfight in Ruma upazila of Bandarban.

The incident, which occurred around 10:30 pm on Wednesday night, left another army man injured, confirmed a press release issued by Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday.

Acting on a tip-off, a patrol team led by Bangladesh Army Senior Warrant Officer Habibur Rahman conducted a drive at the Bothi Para area under Ruma upazila. When a group of PCJSS- Santu Larma members sensed their presence, they opened fire on the army officials, forcing them to fire back in self-defense, said the release.

Habibur Rahman died on the spot as he was shot on his head. While another army man Firoz Alam was shot on his right leg and currently undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Chattogram.

Three criminals also died at the spot and while the others managed to flee, the release added.

During the drive, the army patrol team also seized a submachine gun, 249 bullets, three magazines, three single barrel guns, four special uniforms, and Tk52,900 in cash, which the army claimed was collected as extortion, from the scene.
