Japan has tightened border control and widened the ban on entry of people from 10 countries, including Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Nepal to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan also named Bhutan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar and Philippines in the list on its website on May 17.

The website said that for the time being, foreign nationals who stayed in these countries within 14 days prior to the application for landing will be denied to enter Japan unless special exceptional circumstances are found.

Foreigners (from the countries and regions where the entry bans do not apply) are not denied to enter Japan even when they arrive via those countries or regions, which are subject to denial of permission to entry, for refueling or transit purposes. Those who entered the listed countries or regions will, however, be subject to the entry ban.

Japan currently has 152 countries in its list of countries/regions subject to denial of permission to enter the country.
