The government of Japan will stand by Bangladesh in the event of any disaster, including the Rohingya crisis, outgoing Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh ITO Naoki said on Wednesday.
Ito Naoki paid a farewell meeting with State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Enamur Rahman in his office at the Secretariat, where they discussed the forcibly displaced Rohingya refugees.
The envoy expressed his appreciation for the steps taken by the government to assist the Rohingya people in the refugee camps at Cox's Bazar, especially for providing food, fresh water, medical care, education, and waste disposal.
The ambassador also acknowledged the government's management of rescue operations and supply of provisions to the people affected during the flood in Sylhet and Cyclone Sitrang.
"Construction is ongoing to build more cyclone and flood shelters to make Bangladesh resistant in the face of disaster," State Minister Enamur Rahman told the envoy.
Approximately 10,000 homes and 6,000 hectares of cropland have been damaged in 419 unions across the country in Cyclone Sitrang, he said, appraised the envoy.
Ministry Secretary Md Kamrul Hasan NDC was also present at the meeting.
