Following arrest earlier Monday, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have released Jatiya Party [JP-Manju] Chairman and former lawmaker of Pirojpur-2 constituency Anwar Hossain Manju.

A DB source told Amader Shomoy that Manju was released around 8pm by the relevant police station officer-in-charge under his judicial capacity, considering that Manju is ill and elderly.

Manju was earlier arrested from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Joint commissioner Md Rabiul Islam had confirmed the matter to The Business Post, adding that a DB team picked him up around 2:45pm. Accused in at least five cases, Manju was then taken to the DB office.

Manju is a Bangladeshi politician, businessman and journalist. He is a former lawmaker of Pirojpur-2 constituency and a former water resources minister. He served as a minister in two ministries [communications minister and power, energy and mineral resources minister] twice.

He is a six-time elected lawmaker [1986, 1988, 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2014] of Pirojpur-2 Constituency.

Manju is the leader of a section of the Jatiya Party. His father – Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia – was a renowned politician and the founder of Dainik Ittefaq. He was the editor of Daily Ittefaq from 1972-1975.
