The Chattogram District administration on Sunday seized Hilsa fry – commonly known in the country as jatka – worth Tk 40 lakh in a raid at AK Khan Cold Storage in the port city’s Majhirghat area.
On a tip-off, Executive Magistrate of Chattogram District Administration Prateek Dutta carried out the raid with the Sadarghat police station, and seized around 25 tonnes of jatka, read a press release on Sunday.
Police also arrested the cold storage Manager Chandan Dey.
The seized fishes were distributed among eleven institutions operating under the Department of Social Services, nine madrasas and orphanages, three temples and local workers.
Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong, Abul Basar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman said, "Catching, storing and selling Jatka is banned from November to June."
