Journalists, rights bodies demand Rozina's release

Journalists from across the country and various organisations have expressed their concerns over the arrest of Prothom Alo journalist Rozina Islam.

Dhaka Reporters Unity circulated a statement in media on Tuesday which said, journalism and freedom of speech cannot be stoppedby torturing journalists. Pens of journalists will be sharper than ever during testing times, it further said.

Bangladesh ICT Journalist Forum (BIJF) also expressed deep concernsover Rozina'sarrest. In a statement on Tuesday, BIJF demanded an impartial investigation into the incident that led to Rozina's arrest on Monday.

Eminent citizens -- Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, Hasan Azizul Haque, Anupam Sen, Ramendu Majumder, Sarwar Ali, Mofidul Haque, Mamunur Rashid, Muntasir Mamun, Shahriar Kabir, Abdus Selim and Nasir Uddin Yusuf expressed their concerns over the incident and demanded Rozina's immediate release. They also urged authorities to identify those attacking the journo while she was on duty at the secretariat.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), Bangladesh Human Rights Commission and Ain o Salish Kendra also expressed their concerns over the arrest of the journo.

Bangladesh Human Rights Forum (BHRF), a coalition of 20 human rights organisations, issued a joint statement demanding proper investigation into the incident.

Rozina's coworkers at the Daily Prothom Alo organised a human chain in front of their office at the capital's Kawranbazar area protesting her arrest.
