Awami League Advisory Council member and former lawmaker Joynal Abedin Hazari died at a hospital in the capital on Monday, at the age of 75.

The valiant freedom fighter and former MP from Feni-2 constituency breathed his last around 5:25pm at Labaid Cardiac Hospital while undergoing treatment.

Confirming the news of death, Labaid Group Public Relations Officer Chowdhury Meher-E-Khuda told The Business Post that Joynal Hazari was undergoing treatment at the hospital for the last 12 days with various old-age complications, including cardiac ailment.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader expressed deep condolences and sympathy over the demise of Joynal Hazari, also the former general secretary of the party’s Feni district unit.

Hazari was elected MP from the Feni-2 constituency in 1986, 1991 and 1996.

He was expelled from the Awami League on May 2, 2005 for his involvement in anti-organisational activities.

Hazari left the country for India in 2001 when the caretaker government came to power.

He was jailed for 60 years in five cases in absentia.

Hazari returned to Bangladesh in February 2009 and surrendered to the court. The Awami League leader was imprisoned in Cumilla jail.

Among the 23 cases, the High Court in 2009 granted him bail in 11 cases and acquitted of the remaining cases.
