JRC ministerial-level meeting concluded

Larger issues of cooperation on river resources and river-related issues were discussed during the ministerial-level meeting of the Bangladesh-India Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) concluded on Thursday afternoon.

Beginning around 1:00pm, the formal ministerial-level meeting of the JRC continued till 3:30pm at Sushma Swaraj Bhaban, sources said.

"Larger issues of cooperation on water resources and water-related issues were discussed in the secretary-level meeting on Tuesday...the issues were also discussed in the ministerial-level meeting on Wednesday," said official spokesperson of Indian ministry of External Affairs Arindam Bagchi here this evening.

India's Jal Shakti (Water Resources) Minister Gajendra Singh Shakhawat and State Minister for Water Resources of Bangladesh Zaheed Farooque led their respective sides in the meeting.

Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim also joined the meeting.

Meanwhile, the secretary-level meeting of the Bangladesh-India Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) was held here on Tuesday.

Sources, preferring not to be quoted, said that issues relating to the Kushiyara River, sharing of data on the flow of water in the rivers flowing in India's north-east region and Teesta issues were discussed, among others.

The issues relating to the renewal of the Ganges water sharing treaty were prominently discussed in the meeting.
