Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan, who was elevated as a judge of the Appellate Division recently, passed away at a hospital in the capital on Friday morning.

The Supreme Court judge breathed his last at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) around 6:15am while undergoing treatment, confirmed SC spokesperson Mohammad Saifur Rahman.

He said Justice Nazmul Ahasan contracted Covid-19 recently and was undergoing treatment at BSMMU.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique expressed deep shock and sorrow at the demise of the Supreme Court judge, who would turn 67 on February 15.

The chief justice prayed for the eternal salvation of the departed soul and expressed sympathy to the bereaved family.

Earlier in January, four High Court judges — Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan, Justice Borhanuddin, Justice M Enayetur Rahim, and Justice Krishna Debnath — were elevated as judges of the Appellate Division.

Although three of the judges took oath, Justice Nazmul Ahasan could not do so due to his illness.

Nazmul Ahasan was enrolled as an advocate of the district court in 1986. He was enrolled as a lawyer of the High Court Division and the Appellate Division of Supreme Court in 1994 and 2009 respectively.

He was elevated as an additional judge of the High Court Division in 2010 and appointed judge of the same division in 2012.
