Jute secures 2nd position in export trade replacing leather industry

Textile and Jute Minister Golam Dastigir Gazi said today the country has earned around Taka 2,460 crore (US$ 30.75 crore) in the first quarter of current fiscal year from jute export due to the government’s different action plans replacing the sector second in position with leather industry, reports BSS.

“In the first three months from July-September period, Taka 2,460crore was earned from jute and jute goods export which is 39.26 percent higher than the last corresponding period”, he told a meeting of the officers forum of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) at the ministry here.

Jute sector is now playing an important role in the national economy due to various actions plans of Textile and Jute Ministry for development and extension of the sector.

The ministry is also performing due role in rising raw jute and diversified jute good production by providing incentives in jute goods export and increasing internal use of the golden fiber, according to official release.

About the fair price of jute, Dastigir said, his ministry is aware enough to ensure fair price of the jute growers. Necessary cooperation is being provided to motivate the jute growers and extension of jute industries considering its demand both at domestic and international markets.

A five-year project on production and extension of higher technology based jute and jute seed has been taken by the directorate of jute to increase quality jute production and attaining self-sufficiency in jute seed production. The project is being implemented at 230 upazilas under 46 districts.

Textile and Jute Secretary Lokman Hossen Mia and Additional Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were also present in the meeting.
