Rajshahi's Katakhali Pourashava Mayor Abbas Ali has been temporarily suspended from his duties on Thursday, following a controversy over making derogatory comments regarding a mural of Bangabandhu.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abdul Jalil confirmed the matter to the media on Friday.
The DC received a notification regarding the mayor's suspension around 11:00pm on Thursday night.
The notice was signed by Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Ministry Deputy Secretary Farzana Mannan.
Earlier, a case was filed under the Digital Security Act at the Boalia Model police station against the Katakhali Pourashava Mayor, the notice said.
As Abbas has been arrested and is absent from his office, the inhabitants of the Pourashava are being deprived of the service they deserve, hence he should be suspended temporarily, the notice added.
