A five-year-old child was killed and eleven others were injured in an explosion at the residence of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader at Shubhaddya North Para in Keraniganj early Thursday.
The identity of the child could not be known immediately.
Window glasses of at least 25 neighboring houses were broken in the sound of the explosion.
Shah Zaman, officer-in-charge of South Keraniganj Police Station, said the explosion took place on the third floor of local Jamaat leader Abul Hossain’s house injuring 12 people. Locals rescued the injured and took them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the child succumbed to his injuries.
“The cause of the explosion is still unclear,” the OC said.
Quoting locals, police said 10/12 activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir, student front of Jamaat, used to live at the house.
The house owner and the Shibir activists went into hiding after the explosion.
