Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairperson Khaleda Zia returned home from Evercare Hospital in the city on Tuesday evening, 81 days after she underwent treatment at the hospital.

The BNP chief reached her residence, Feroza, at Gulshan-2 around 7:30pm after being discharged from the hospital.

BNP Vice-Chairman Zainul Abedin said the decision about taking the party leader to her residence was taken considering the Covid-19 situation in the country.

Earlier in the evening, the medical board, formed to ensure Khaleda’s treatment, held a press conference on her health condition at Evercare Hospital.

Dr Fakhruddin Mohammad Siddiqui, chief of the medical board, said although Khaleda Zia’s health is now stable apparently, there is no guarantee that she will not have internal bleeding again in the future.

Khaleda, a 76-year-old former prime minister, was readmitted to Evercare Hospital on November 13 last year, a couple of days after she returned home from the hospital.

She was taken to the coronary care unit the next day as her condition deteriorated.

Her medical board members said Khaleda immediately needed to go abroad for better treatment as she was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis.

On behalf of her family, Khaleda's younger brother, Shamim Iskander, submitted an application to the Ministry of Home Affairs on November 11 urging the government to allow her to go abroad for better treatment.

The government is yet to dispose of the application while ministers are saying the BNP chief has no scope to go abroad until she files a fresh application after returning to jail.
