Khilgaon ‘Sky View Tower’ sealed over fire safety issue

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Tuesday raided a number of residential buildings home to restaurants in the capital’s Shahid Baki Road, four days after Bailey Road’s terrible fire incident.

As part of this drive, a DSCC mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Md Jahangir Alam sealed off “Nightingale Sky View Tower,” due to the building having inadequate fire suppression systems, narrow stairs, and multiple restaurants, including in the basement.

According to the local people, many restaurants in Khilgaon did not open on Tuesday morning after receiving a tip off on the raid. They also claimed that 90 per cent of these restaurants are located in residential buildings.

As a result, this area’s characteristics as a residential area have been compromised, which is in violation of RAJUK’s regulations.

Executive Magistrate Md Jahangir Alam said “The mobile court conducted a raid on Nightingale Sky View Tower located at holding 919/1. During inspection, we found all the other restaurants in the 7-storey building were closed except Sharma King on the 2nd floor.

“Additionally, it has come to our attention that the fire safety system of the entire building is inadequate. So, the building has been sealed off for safety reasons. During the drive, we noticed that most of the restaurants in residential buildings closed their doors.”

Later, the Fire Service and Civil Defence, hoisted a banner in front of the building that read, “This building is extremely dangerous in terms of fire safety” in accordance with the Fire Prevention and Extinguishing Act 2003.

On Monday, the DSCC conducted a raid in the capital's Dhanmondi area, sealing off the “Keari Crescent” building located in Satmasjid Road due to a lack of fire safety measures.

RAJUK sealed off 12 restaurants in Gawsia Twin Peak building, Dhanmondi and Dhaka Metropolitan Police, and detained 16 staffers in the capital's Wari area the same day.
