The intern doctors of Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) have called a work abstention from today, demanding the safety of doctors and students, in protest against a clash between medicine traders and students that happened on Monday.

They also held the administration, college and hospital authorities accountable for the clashes.

The intern doctors shared the information in a press release on Monday night.

Earlier on Monday night, a clash took place between medicine traders and students in front of Khulna Medical College.

Dr Mehedi Newaz, vice-principal of Khulna Medical College, told reporters that a student of Khulna Medical College locked into an argument with a shopkeeper at a drugstore over purchasing medicines.

At one point, several shopkeepers beat him up. When the other students came to know about it, they went to the drugstore and the shopkeepers beat them up too, leaving fifteen students injured, he said.

"The students have issued an ultimatum to arrest the attackers," the vice-principal added.

Sheikh Imran, ADC (South) of Khulna Metropolitan Police, said police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

"Efforts are on to nab the attackers. Additional police have been deployed in front of the medical college hospital and medicine shops," the officer added.
