Kuet teacher’s death: 4 including BCL gen secy expelled

Four students of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet), including Kuet unit Bangladesh Chhatra League General Secretary Sadman Nahyan Sejan, have been expelled in connection with the unnatural death of its teacher Md Selim Hossain.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of Kuet syndicate in the afternoon, said Kuet Acting Registrar Anisur Rahman Bhuiyan on Wednesday.

The other students who have been expelled are Hasan Abdul Qayum, Md Riaz Khan and Md Kamruzzaman.

Additionally, seven students were suspended for two academic years and expelled from their respective dormitories. They are Tahmidul Haq Riaz, Mahmudul Hasan, Sadman Sakib, Mahim Muntasir, ASM Ragib Ahsan, Mir Jamiur Rahman and Rudronil Singha Shovo.

Besides, Aniqur Rahman was suspended for one academic year and expelled from the dormitory.

Twenty-two other students were suspended for one academic year but their punishment will be effective in the future if any allegation of moral turpitude is proven correct.

Besides, 10 students were fined Tk 10,000 each. But this punishment will not be effective now, and they will get the punishment if any allegation of moral degradation is proven true in the future.

Anisur Rahman said some restrictions have been imposed on political activities to bring discipline on the campus. All political banners, posters and festoons were to be removed from the campus and permission has to be taken from the Students’ Welfare Director’s office ahead of holding any political meeting or bringing out processions.

Prof Selim, 38, a teacher of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department at the university and also the provost of Lalan Shah Hall, died on November 30.

Earlier on December 3, the university was declared closed till December 13 and then the closure was extended.

Kuet authorities decided that the campus will reopen on January 8 and classes will resume on January 9.
