Land offices to come under CCTV surveillance

In order to cut down on corruption and increase transparency, the Ministry of Land is planning to install CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) cameras in land record and survey offices across the country.

Director General of Land Record and Survey department Md Taslimul Islam recently sent a letter to Finance Secretary Abdur Rouf Talukder seeking fund for installing CCTV cameras in land offices.

Confirming the matter, an official of finance division said, however, the letter didn’t mention the amount of money needed for the project.

According to the letter, land survey department wants to setup remote-controlled (online) service system through CCTV cameras in the land offices across the country to cut down own corruption, reduce harassment and increase transparency.

Land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury said, “Setup of close circuit cameras is a pilot project. I think it will be handful in preventing corruption and ensuring accountability."

TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said, “Political will is needed to reduce corruption in any sector. These gadgets (CCTV cameras) can also be very effective to reduce corruption in the government administration."

Earlier on June 5, the Ministry of Land received the prestigious "United Nations Public Service Award-2020" in the category of "Developing transparent and accountable public institutions".
