6 die as launch capsizes in Shitalakkhya, dozens missing

At least six people were killed as a launch carrying more than 50 passengers capsized after a collision with a cargo vessel in the Shitalakkhya River in Narayanganj on Sunday.

The media cell of the Fire Service and Civil Defence confirmed the number of casualties.

Around 20 to 25 people are still missing, it added.

Dhaka River Port official Gulzar Ali said the launch, ML Afsar Uddin, was heading towards Munshiganj from Narayanganj launch terminal.

It capsized in the Syedpur Koyla Ghat area around 2:15pm after a collision with the cargo vessel, MV Rupshi-9, he said.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) Director Rafiqul Islam said rescue operation was underway.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Shipping formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the incident.

The committee has also been asked to submit its report within three working days to the ministry, according to an office order.
