Lawyers urge ACC to probe EC officials for graft

A group of ten law practitioners of the Supreme Court on Thursday urged the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to investigate corruption allegations against the chief Chief Election Commissioner & Election Commissioners and other election officials.

They submitted an application to ACC chief Iqbal Mahmud in this regard.

The matter was confirmed by ACC Public Relations (Director) Officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya.

The application said, “Several media reports have alleged that more than 7.47 crore taka was embezzled by the Election Commission (EC) on the pretext of training, which in most of the cases, were out of the jurisdiction of EC policy and without approval from Finance Ministry.”

The application was filled by supreme court lawyers Md Shisir Monir, Md Asad Uddin, Md Muzahidul Islam, Md Jubaidur Rahman, Md Abdus Sobur Dewan, R Reza Md Amir, Abdullah Hil Maruf Fahim, GM Mujahidur Rahman, Mustafizur Rahman and Md Zahirul Islam.

A report of Daily Jugantor dated January 3 titled "sleepless night in EC on training allowance" was attached with the application.

The application also alleged, “According to the media report, money was also embezzled beyond approved posts entitled for allowance in the name of 'special speakers', 'course director', 'course advisor'. Allowances were also taken beyond the maximum limit by Chief Election Commissioner, Election Commissioners, EC Secretary, former EC secretary and officials of different levels at EC secretariat.”

The application claimed that those individuals committed crime under different articles of ACC act.
