The authorities in Bangladesh on Tuesday extended a lockdown in Teknaf and Ukhiya upazilas and five Rohingya camps of Cox's Bazar until June 6 as Covid-19 cases continue to rise dramatically among the camp residents.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Teknaf Parvez Chowdhury and of Ukhiya Nizam Uddin Ahmed confirmed the matter of lockdown extension in both upazilas on Tuesday.

On the other hand, Additional Refugee, Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Shamsud Douza confirmed the lockdown extension in the camps.

Camps 2, 3, 4, 15 and 24 out of the total 34 Rohingyas camps were put under lockdown earlier on May 21 for 10 days, banning inter-camp movement in the camps as part of the new restrictions.

Nearly 7, 40,000 Rohingya refugees fled to Bangladesh following a wave of persecution and military crackdown in Myanmar in August 2017. The number of Rohingyas living in Cox’s Bazar is over one million, according to Bangladeshi authorities.
