The government has extended an ongoing countrywide lockdown for one more week until May 30 midnight as the coronavirus infections keep spreading.

The Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification on Sunday in this regard after receiving approval from the Prime Minister's Office.

According to the new instructions, inter-district public transports will resume operation with half the capacities. Only intra-district public transportation was allowed to run earlier due to 'strict' lockdown restrictions.

Hotels and food outlets will also cater to half their seating arrangements, reads the notification.

The ongoing lockdown is scheduled to expire on May 23.

The National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 earlier emphasised extending the ongoing lockdown till the end of May and attached importance to maintaining social distance and hygiene.

Earlier on May 17, health minister Zahid Maleque also recommended the ongoing curbs to be extended further in a press briefing at the Secretariat.
