The government is considering to extend the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown for a week and give magistracy power to police to ensure use of face masks aiming to reduce risks of virus transmission.
State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain made the disclosure to the media Thursday.
The government imposed a nationwide lockdown on April 5 which was later extended in phases until May 16 to stop the spread of Covid-19.
Industries, factories, banks and stock markets were allowed to operate from the beginning of the lockdown maintaining certain health guidelines.
The government authorities, however, have struggled to force the lockdown measures in other fields and subsequently allowed shops to remain open until 9:00pm, domestic flights to operate in along most routes and public transport to ply in cities.
Experts said the lax measures rendered the lockdown into a mere formality, leaving no serious impact on the pandemic situation in the country.
The death toll from Covid-19 rose to 12,076 with 778,687 caseloads as of Thursday.
Farhad said that a fresh order could be issued in this regard on May 16.
