Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen soft launched the most expensive tea produced in Bangladesh.

The minister soft launched the tea at a function in Dubai on Friday.

Named “Golden Bengal Tea”, the tea would be priced at 1.4 million pound per kilogram, a post from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ verified Facebook account read on Saturday.

London Tea Exchange, a premium tea company located at 103 Brick Lane, London, is expected to fully launch Golden Bengal Tea in May 2022. Originating from Sylhet, this brand of tea is set to become the most expensive tea in the world.

According to Prestige, the most expensive tea in 2021 was Da-Hong Pao tea from China, followed by Panda dung tea from the same country and Yellow gold tea buds from Singapore. However, none comes close to the estimated price of the Golden Bengal Tea.

Moreover, each tea leaf is coated in 24 carat gold, which explains why the price is set so high. The process of making this tea is rather time consuming, further validating the steep price.

Producing this tea takes around four and a half year, Indian news media ABP Ananda reported last year, citing Aliur Rahman, the head of the London Tea Exchange. It takes 900 kg of tea to produce one kg of the Golden Bengal Tea.

“Yesterday we had the honour of serving tea to the Bangladeshi Foreign minister AK Abdul Momen. He had the opportunity to try The Golden Bengal tea, the most expensive tea in the world,” a separate Facebook post from the London Tea Exchange’s account read.

“We are very excited to announce this beautiful tea will be released in May 2022,” the post added.

The video attached with the Facebook post showed AK Abdul Momen trying out the tea and praising Aliur Rahman.

“You are a marketing guru,” he told Aliur Rahman, emphasising the fact that the steep price was “unthinkable”.

“It has a beautiful aroma,” the minister remarked after trying the tea.
