Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh's acting amir Muhibullah Babunagari has been elected amir of the group.
His name was officially announced as the chief after a meeting of the Khas and central committee of the organisation at 4:30pm on Sunday, Mir Idris, organising secretary of the group, confirmed the media.
The meeting was held for the first time since the death of former Hefazat head Junaid Babunagari.
Earlier, following the death of the 68-year-old incumbent amir Allama Junaid Babunagari, Hefazat-e-Islam's Shura (consultation) committee on August 19 appointed his uncle and former chief advisor Maulana Muhibullah Babunagari as the acting amir.
Junaid Babunagari died on August 19 at a hospital in Chattogram after he suffered a stroke at Hathazari Madrasa. Babunagari had been suffering from different age-related complications, including kidney problems and diabetes.
was buried at Hathazari Madrasa graveyard beside the grave of the organisation's first chief Allama Shafi.
He took the reins of Hefazat-e-Islam in November 2020 after the death of Allama Shafi, the first amir and supreme leader of the organisation in September 2020.
