Major General Ziaul Ahsan has been detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka on Wednesday night.
The former high-ranking officer, recently dismissed from the Bangladesh Army, was intercepted and taken into custody as he was brought back from the runway to the boarding bridge, several media outlets have confirmed this development.
Sources at the airport said that Flight-585 of the Emirates airlines, carrying Ziaul Ahsan, was back-taxied from the runway to the boarding bridge. Later on, he was arrested and brought down from the flight.
“Ziaul Ahsan was then taken to the Dhaka Cantonment,” according to several media reports, The Business Post, however, could verify this information independently.
Till his dismissal, Maj Gen Ziaul served as the Director General of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC) from 2022. Prior to that, he was a director of NTMC.
Ziaul's career has been marked by rapid ascension and controversy. In 2009, he became the deputy commanding officer of RAB-2 and was swiftly promoted to lieutenant colonel, assuming the role of director of the elite force’s intelligence wing at its headquarters within the same year.
His tenure has been shadowed by serious allegations, including involvement in forced disappearances and assassinations. These controversies have cast a long shadow, leading to heightened scrutiny.
