Absconding former Bangladeshi envoy Mohamad Khairuzzaman has been released by the Malaysian Immigration Department.

His lawyer in Malaysia, Ngeow Chow Ying, confirmed his release, reports Malay Mail on Wednesday.

Khairuzzaman, 65, who had been living in Malaysia on a UNHCR refugee card, was detained by the Malaysia Immigration Department last week.

However, he is wanted in Bangladesh for being involved with 1975’s notorious jail killing case.

While he was detained by the Immigration Department of Malaysia, his wife Rieta Rahman claimed that his arrest was politically motivated.

Khairuzzaman, an ex-army major whose name appeared on the charge sheet for being involved with the killing of national leaders Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Mansur Ali and AHM Quamruzzaman in Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975.

In 2007, during the caretaker government regime, he was acquitted and appointed High Commissioner to Malaysia.

Earlier in November 2021, Prime Minister's ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy in a Facebook post detailed the rise of Khairuzzaman under the BNP-Jamaat government.

As per the post, Khairuzzaman was sent to Egypt in 1975, following the assassination of Bangabandhu and four leaders.

Later, he served as the acting ambassador to the Philippines till 1996, a diplomat to Myanmar in 2005 and two years later he was made the ambassador to Malaysia.

Last time in 2009, Khairuzzaman was recalled to Dhaka after the Awami League-led government came to power.

However, the former diplomat managed to obtain the UN Refugee Card in Kuala Lumpur and continued to stay there.
