The Malaysian government has announced the country will launch an ‘eLocker’ database service for Bangladeshi migrant workers.

Malaysian Home Affairs Minister Hamzah bin Zainudin presented the details of the eLocker service to Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan during a bilateral meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, said a press release signed by Home Ministry Senior Information Officer Md Sharif Mahmud Apu.

According to the Malaysian government, the eLocker database will safeguard expatriates, including Bangladeshi workers working, from being harassed or cheated in Malaysia. It will also contain detailed information of all Bangladeshis living in Malaysia.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan met his Malaysian counterpart following an invitation to visit the country on the occasion of Defense Service Asia (DSA).

The Bangladeshi government has already taken many initiatives to record information of migrant workers in the form of a database, being maintained by the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas.

Both the countries have agreed to cooperate in this regard, where Malaysia even proposed to sign a MoU to ensure that no Bangladeshis living in Malaysia can be deceived in any way.

Malaysia would stand by Bangladesh in expediting the repatriation of the forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals, he added.
