RAB apprehended a man early Thursday for transporting heroin by using a ‘movement pass’ issued for distributing masks and hand sanitiser.
The arrestee was identified as Sawmik Ahmed Siddique, 42.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun of RAB-2 confirmed the matter to the media.
He said a team of RAB-2 set up a checkpost in front of the Town Hall Market in the Mohammadpur area of Dhaka based on a tip-off about a big consignment of drugs to be delivered there.
Based on the information and further surveillance, the RAB-2 team arrested Sawmik at the checkpost around 3:30am on Thursday.
RAB-2 members recovered 320 grams of heroin from his possession and confiscated the private car he used for the delivery.
Taking advantage of the big demand for masks and sanitiser during the pandemic, he obtained a ‘movement pass’ under the cover of delivering those products, Sawmik told RAB members during initial questioning.
According to Abdullah Al Mamun, the arrestee admitted to purchasing drugs from different locations of Bangladesh and distributing those in the capital.
