Man held for destroying communal harmony over Cumilla incident

The law enforcers have made another arrest over the communal violence following the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a puja mandap in Cumilla.

The Rapid Action Battalion apprehended Golam Mawla on charges of destroying communal harmony by hurting religious sentiments by spreading propaganda on social media about the Cumilla incident.

RAB Assistant Director of legal and media wing Imran Khan confirmed the news of the arrest on Thursday night.

The incident occurred on Wednesday when the Hindu devotees were celebrating Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the community.

Meanwhile, a wave of communal stress during the ongoing Durga Puja celebration led to sporadic clashes across the country that left at least four people killed and 250 others injured.

To bring the situation under control and avoid further untoward incidents, members of Border Guard Bangladesh have been deployed in 22 districts ahead of Bijaya Dashami, the final ritual of Durga Puja.

Police have so far arrested over 100 people in allegation of their involvement with the attacks in Cumilla, Chandpur, Kurigram and Gazipur.

Deputy Inspector General Anwar Hossain of Chattogram range of police said at least two probe committees have been formed and 43 people arrested, including the prime accused Fayez Uddin, in connection with the Cumilla incident.

On Wednesday, a video went viral on social media, including Facebook and YouTube, showing the sacrilege of the Holy Quran in a temple at Nanuadighee in Cumilla.
