National Security Intelligence (NSI) officials detained a man with 2.5kg gold estimated to be worth around Tk 1.64 crore at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on Wednesday morning.
“The detainee, Jasim Uddin arrived from Sharjah on an Air Arabia flight (G9-526) and tried to smuggle the gold by converting them into coils inside a cooking machine,” the Airport Director Wing Commander Taslim Ahmed confirmed the matter to The Business Post.
Acting on a tip-off, NSI carried out a search operation and recovered approximately 2.09kg of gold, 2 gold bars and 100 grams of gold ornaments, totalling 2.423kg gold and a large amount of cosmetics from Jashim, according to the airport press release.
The seized gold is estimated to be around Tk1.64 crore. The process is on to take legal steps against the passenger, the release added.
